Great Scott! It's the Future! NYE 2009-2010

Embarking upon a new year causes one to take the opportunity to reflect, to regret, and to map out a new beginning. When thinking about a topic to kick off this new year I focused on the resolutions we make and the way in which we may often find ourselves failing to follow through by year's end. Perhaps it’s all about coming to understand and gain perspective into the topic which we resolve to fix in the coming new year. Given that this blog's topics frequently hover around the male/female relationship, it might seem obvious to choose a topic which gives me cause to write a weekly commentary. Something in which all of this wordy hubbub revolves, and we must all come to understand before we can resolve to make it right. But the thing is, we have grown up entertained, enthralled, and inspired by film and television. Our morals, beliefs, hopes and dreams have, whether we choose to accept it or not, been influenced by the 2-dimensional images that have been reflected back upon us. We've grown up watching films that centered on love defying all odds, amazing story arcs that hinge on a single coincidence, and tales that always end happily. Growing into adulthood, some people let the romantic comedies or dramas still lead them to believe that life and love comes about just as effortlessly, which just makes real life seem that much more drab. Don't let life be guided by the ramblings of Hollywood writers, or even worse, nameless internet proverbs, and chain letters full of quirky clever fortune cookie worthy advice. When looking back on the past year, think of all the experiences you might have taken for granted and when they occurred. Map out, in reverse, the path your life has taken the last couple years, after doing so, you might be surprised at what kind of New Year's Resolutions you come up with.

Happy New Years, Happy 2010.... now where is my G-D flying car?

Caution: Women Parking

I heard about this on the radio and found an article about it online. A shopping mall in China built a parking lot just for women. Some of the features include parking spots that are 1 meter wider than usual, more lights so they can see better, bright purple and pink colored walls and more. According to the shopping mall, the parking lot caters to women’s “strong sense of colour and different sense of distance”. [Link]

Difference sense of distance… I like that.

Day and Knight

Most who saw "Avatar" this weekend were blindsided by a trailer for what's probably the most low-key Tom Cruise film in a decade, the James Mangold-directed "Knight & Day." In the punchy, blockbustery clip, Cruise is some sort of secret agent who bumps into duck-faced civilian Cameron Diaz while on some sort of mission (impossible!). Eventually, she realizes that this handsome if creepily youthful-looking (praise Xenu!) action hero is going to have to save her from some shady people (Peter Sarsgaard) in order to return to her normal, car-chase-free life.

The project, originally titled "Wichita," is one of a host of Cruise projects he's been eying during what's ended up being a pretty long hiatus from the screen. Among those were the David Cronenberg-directed "The Matarese Circle," the action thriller "Edwin A. Salt" (now "Salt" with Angelina Jolie) and the action-thriller "The Tourist" that may have Johnny Depp attached. I have to admit, I am curious about "Knight & Day," which, judging by its trailer, seems to play fast and loose with large action set pieces and broad dumb comedy.

Happy Festivus

Happy Festivus, as today is the holiday for the rest of us. The aluminum pole is up, and we are all set for the feats of strength and the airing of grievances. Celebrate that you made it this far and survived another year on this planet. It's a Festivus miracle!

The Proposition

"Australia, What Fresh Hell is This?" Considering the absolute brutality of the Australian outback, it’s surprising that there haven’t been more great takes on the Western genre from down under. But, boy, was the wait worth it for director John Hillcoat’s “The Proposition.” Re-teaming with the godlike Nick Cave, who was also behind the script for Hillcoat’s debut “Ghosts of the Civil Dead,” the story takes on the mythic qualities of some of Cave’s best work, helped in no small part by his score with fellow Bad Seed Warren Ellis — probably my favorite of the musician’s film work. It’s a nasty, grimy little film, reminiscent of the best of Peckinpah, with a fantastic cast (John Hurt and Danny Huston being the stand-outs) buried under layers of blood, dirt and sweat — these are people battling against an endless, godless landscape, and they’re losing. Plus, it has the best exploding head scenes of the decade... see it, better yet, see it on Blu Ray, it's a cheap disc.

We Know Drama

Say you're single, and you're catching up with friends who are married... sometimes, doesn't it feel like you're the only one talking? At first it may feel really self-centered, until you realized you're the only one with any updates. Aside from some construction, new furniture, mutual funds, or some random everyday anecdote, they don’t have any news, much less, drama.

If you wonder if you’ll ever be settled like them. If your life will ever be drama-free, without all the instability in your "relationships," both good and bad, don't worry... the bus will hit you soon enough.

Pac Man Knows What Time it is...

Do we have any Pac-Man fans out there? For a limited time over at ClubNamco, you can get this cool looking Pac-Man Pellet Time watch.

Pac-Man and the ghost gang are featured on the watch face, with Inky, Pinky and Clyde trapped inside a ghost nest, and Power Pellet hour markers around the dial. Pac-Man moves with an invisible ’second’ hand around the dial to chomp up pellets, as well as bonus cherries and Scaredy ghost which accent the ‘3′ and ‘9′ hour markers.

In grade school, a friend of mine had the old LCD Nelsonic Pac-Man watch, which entertained us during class. What I really could use is the full-sized Pac-Man cabinet arcade game. Yeah, I know, that's what the ladies want...

HOPE

I'm sure somewhere this image is on a shirt, 2 sizes too small, being worn by a Star Wars geek. To that geek, I ask: "where did you get it?"

Modern Warfare Director Graduating to Features

"New Moon" has made peanuts when compared to the colossal success of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," which has sold a staggering $3 billion worth of copies since its release last month.

The director of the game, Keith Arem, will make his feature debut on "Frost Road," an independent sci-fi actioner for producer Cary Brokaw ("Angels in America"). It follows a young man who is immune from a deadly virus that has been unleashed on a small coastal town.

Bachelor

Megalomania is watching a man with a brain in a jar court a woman who laughs like a mule, and believing that it’s the story of one’s life. Weakness is losing a thought to a pretty face. Concupiscence is the interpretation of awkward roughhousing as a prelude to fucking. Jealousy is wondering why one never had the same opportunity, and acceptance is realizing that one did.

In the end, it’s not the situations we relate to, it’s the hopelessness of being stuck with the decisions we make. Of being caught between the risk of settling, and the fear of not doing any better.

Happiness is freedom from both.
